This is the Spanish language version of a classic Montessori material often called "Definitions in Stages." These cards match the pages in the Land & Water 1 Book, but instead of reading a finished definition, children rebuild it themselves — mixing and matching term and phrase cards like puzzle pieces until the definition is accurate. This hands-on format turns definitions from something read passively into something reconstructed actively.
All Spanish text was translated by native Spanish-speaking Montessorians, ensuring natural, classroom-accurate vocabulary.

Definition format includes five cards for each term (all card sizes are approximate):
- Control Cards (term & full definition on one card) (3⅔” x 4⅓”)
- Term Cards (3⅔” x ¾”)
- Full Definition Cards (3⅔” x 3⅜”)
- First-half Definition Cards (3⅔” x 1¼”)
- Second-half Definition Cards (3⅔” x 2¼”)

Why does this format matter for literacy?
Reading comprehension depends on language structures and verbal reasoning as well as vocabulary (Scarborough, 2001) — a student needs to understand not just what a term means, but how the parts of its definition fit together grammatically and logically. Rebuilding a definition from separate word and phrase cards forces a student to actively reason through that structure, rather than simply recognizing a finished sentence. That active reconstruction builds a deeper, more durable understanding of the term than reading the definition alone.
How do you use these cards?
Before using the cards, naturally expose the child to the vocabulary through conversation, real-world observation, the corresponding Land & Water 1 book, and the matching 3-Part Cards.
You can use these cards alone, but we recommend adding on the Vocabulary Cards, Book, and 3-part Cards to make a complete Land & Water Build-a-Book Set (no pictures are included in this packet). To use alone, layout the name card for all terms, then match the definition to each term. Use the control card to check your work. When this has been mastered, add complexity by matching the name card, then the first half of the definition, and then the final half of the definition. Again, use the control card to check your own work.
What ages is this for?
Typically grades K–6 (ages 6–12). Because the cards rely on text alone with no photos for support, they work best with students who are already reading well and have some background knowledge of the topic — often from the Land & Water 1 book or the matching 3-Part Cards.
