Multiplication Equations
These static and dynamic (with carrying) equations encourage independent work with your base ten manipulatives. Use these to create visual equations. Layout the base ten materials on a large table just like the equation shows;take the multiplicand (the top number in the equation) manipulatives out as many times as is shown on the multiplier (the bottom number). Then, slide them all together to create the quotient. Guide the child to write down the equations and answers in their own math journal.
If the children aren't writing with precision yet, make your own Decimal Cards to help them focus on the base 10 system rather than the challenges they're having in writing numbers accurately.
